How to Use Market Research to Position Yourself as a High-Demand Coach
Introduction: The Power of Market Research for Coaches In a fast-paced, competitive coaching industry, becoming a high-demand coach is not just about having the right
We all have activities we’re drawn to—things that make us lose track of time and bring us joy. Whether it’s creating art, writing, cooking, or even tinkering with gadgets, these hobbies are more than just pastimes. They are clues to our deeper passions and talents. But transforming these passions into a profitable business isn’t about simply monetizing a hobby. It’s about understanding the core elements that drive our interests and leveraging them to create something meaningful and impactful.
When I left my stable IT career, I initially thought turning my hobby into a business was the answer. I wanted to transform my passion for technology into a profitable venture. However, my first business venture, a tech startup, failed due to the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency space. It was a devastating experience, but it taught me an invaluable lesson: success doesn’t come from just following your passion; it comes from aligning that passion with purpose and value.
This journey is about understanding why we are drawn to certain activities and how we can use those insights to build a career or business that truly resonates with who we are. It’s about finding the intersection of passion, skills, and market needs—a concept beautifully captured in the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai.
Hobbies are often reflections of our inner desires and values. They give us a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that goes beyond mere enjoyment. But what if we looked deeper? What if we asked ourselves why these activities resonate with us?
For example, let’s say you love cooking. It’s not just about preparing food—it’s about creativity, the joy of nourishing others, and the satisfaction of creating something unique. Similarly, if you’re drawn to painting, it may be less about the art itself and more about the freedom of expression and the emotional release it provides.
Action Step: Uncover Your Motivations Create a list of your hobbies and interests. For each one, write down why you enjoy it. What does it give you? How does it make you feel? What skills do you use or develop when engaging in this hobby?
Example: When I transitioned from IT to coaching, it wasn’t just a shift in industry; it was a journey to understand my true motivations. I realized that I was drawn to coaching not just because I enjoyed helping others, but because I loved solving complex problems and facilitating growth and transformation in people’s lives. This deeper understanding became the foundation of my coaching business.
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means “reason for being.” It’s about finding the sweet spot where what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for intersect. When you operate from your Ikigai, you’re not just working; you’re fulfilling your true purpose.
Action Step: Identify Your Ikigai Reflect on your skills and passions, then ask yourself these four questions:
Finding your Ikigai can be a transformative experience. It’s not just about finding a job or starting a business; it’s about aligning your life with your true purpose.
Personal Insight: For me, coaching became my Ikigai because it allowed me to use my skills in problem-solving and communication to help others achieve their personal and professional goals. It was a natural fit that aligned with my passions and the needs of the people I wanted to serve.
Every successful person has faced setbacks. The key is not to avoid failure but to learn from it and use it as a stepping stone. My tech startup failed, but it didn’t mean I failed. Instead, it was an opportunity to pivot, to reassess my strengths and passions, and to build something more aligned with my values and purpose.
The “One Step Ahead” Principle: You don’t have to have everything figured out or be perfect to start. You only need to be one step ahead of where your ideal client or audience is. By sharing your journey, your struggles, and your insights, you can help others who are in a similar position.
Action Step: Leverage Your Experiences Think about a challenge you’ve overcome in your life. How did you get through it? What did you learn? How can you use this experience to help others? This is your unique value—your story and perspective are what will resonate with others and set you apart.
Personal Story: After my business failed, I realized I could still help others by sharing my experiences and the lessons I learned. I didn’t need to be perfect; I just needed to be willing to share my journey and support others on theirs.
Success in business doesn’t come from just doing what you love; it comes from aligning what you love with what others need and are willing to pay for. It’s about creating value and solving real problems.
Creating a Sustainable Business: Your business model should reflect your passion and strengths but also address a genuine need in the market. Think about how you can offer your skills and services in a way that creates value for others while allowing you to grow and thrive.
Action Step: Develop a Value Proposition Craft a value proposition that clearly states what you offer, who you serve, and why it matters. This will be the foundation of your business and will guide your marketing, sales, and service strategies.
Example: When I started my coaching business, I focused on professionals seeking more meaning and fulfillment in their careers. My value proposition was clear: I help individuals navigate career transitions and build purpose-driven lives, leveraging my own experiences and insights.
Turning your passion into a profitable business isn’t just about monetizing what you love. It’s about understanding why you’re drawn to certain activities and how you can use that understanding to create something that truly serves others and fulfills you.
